UK HR News - change in vacation entitlement: New statutory minimum requirements now in place.

18 October, 2007 - New UK regulations have come into effect increasing the statutory minimum number of annual leave days to which employees are entitled - from 20 to 28.

Prior to October 1, 2007, employers were required to provide a statutory minimum of 12 vacation days + 8 public/bank holidays, for a total of 20 required days leave. The new regulations entitle employees to a minimum of 20 vacation days + 8 days for bank/public holidays, for a total of 28 days required annual leave.

The increase is occurring in two stages: the first took effect on 1 October 2007, when the legal minimum entitlement increased to a total of 24 days per annum (16 vacation days + 8 public/bank holidays). The second increase will go into effect April 1, 2009, raising the legal minimum to 28 days annual leave (20 vacation days + the 8 public/bank holidays).

These numbers are the legal minimum entitlement, and in practice, many companies already provided at least 20 days of vacation, plus the 8 public holidays. Therefore, the new regulations effectively endorse current best practice.
